Texas Student Not Allowed to Wear ‘Honor Society’ Ribbon Because of Hurt Feelings

A high school in Plano, Texas, is forbidding students in the National Honor Society (NHS) from wearing their branded collar at graduation because it might hurt the feelings of non-members, according to reports this week.

Garrett Frederick, a student at Plano Senior High, was told by officials that he couldn’t wear it with his gown at graduation because the school didn’t want to single out students.

“I was really looking forward to wearing it and being able to say I was a part of it, because I have friends that go to [Plano East High School] and [Plano West High School], and they’re all wearing it,” Frederick told KVUE.

“So it’s like, I don’t know why we’re not allowed to wear it. I don’t get it.”

NHS members often wear the white collar as a mark of their commitment to the organization.

“I’m not just an honor student — I’m an NHS student. I worked hard. I put in the hours,” said Frederick, who had put 20 hours worth of community service into the club.

Frederick’s mother had written a letter to the school principal, who replied that students aren’t allowed to wear regalia at graduation.
