Teen Taught Himself to Sew to Pull Family Out of Poverty–Now Has His Own Fashion Line Business

We’ve all heard the phrase or some variation of it, “it doesn’t matter what has happened to you, what matters is what we do with it.” Eighteen-year-old fashion designer Jimelle Levon, of Columbus, Ohio, is living proof that there is a lot of truth in that saying.

When Levon was just 10 years old, he and his mother were living in homeless shelters. While most kids at his age would have felt completely helpless in that situation, Levon began accepting small jobs to earn extra cash. He was determined to help his mother out of their situation and make a better life. Even after he and his mom finally got a place of their own, Levon’s strong work ethic remained.

When he was 14 years old, Levon created his own sewing workshop inside his tiny bedroom and began to turn his dream of becoming a fashion designer into a reality. He created original designs and even taught himself to sew. In the beginning, Levon painted unique designs on shoes and jean shorts.

But it wasn’t long before Levon dreamed up an idea that would eventually help him create a name for himself and launch his career in the fashion industry. Inspired by the popular film “Coming to America,” Levon set out to recreate the gold-sequined formal wear from the movie. Levon and his lucky date, Vanessa Bell, wore his custom designs on the night of their prom.

Creating a beautiful golden evening gown and matching tuxedo was not an easy task. Levon had to cut each flower by hand before they could be incorporated into his design. Attaching the flowers to the sheer fabric of his date’s form-fitting dress presented another challenge. But in the end, his hard work paid off.

Levon had always believed that his designs would be an internet sensation if they were done right. The photos of Levon and his date quickly went viral on social media, and his amazing story was featured in multiple news articles. Of course, this didn’t surprise Levon in the least.

Levon’s story also caught the attention of celebrity Steve Harvey. The young upstart was invited to the “Steve Harvey” show to showcase some of his original designs. He received the invitation last minute but managed to finish the three gowns featured on the show just minutes before filming began.

Now, Levon’s designs have gained so much popularity that he has a long list of customers waiting to wear a “Jimelle Levon” gown. While his prom date received her dress for free, Levon’s dresses now sell for as much as $450. Along with his self-named evening gown line, Levon has created another clothing line called “KoldKut,” which features fashionable attire with a sporty vibe.

Like any fashion designer, Levon would love to have a celebrity wear one of his designs. His ultimate goal is to have his dresses mass-produced. With his talent and strong work ethic, there’s no telling how far Levon will go.

Levon is currently attending Georgia’s Clark University, where he is studying fashion and working on improving his sewing skills. Though he came from humble beginnings, it seems that the sky is the limit for this young fashion designer.
