Tchaikovsky: Valse-Scherzo, Op. 34 – 2019 Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra

PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY

Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) left his mark on the Romantic era with a range of compositions exhibiting his innovative style, as well as his harmonic and melodic prowess. Tchaikovsky, like many of his contemporary European composers, was enamored with the waltz, applying it profusely to everything from symphonies to chamber works. His 1877 Valse-Scherzo is a brilliant example. Written for solo violin and orchestra, it showcases the soloist’s technical mastery. A graceful and light-hearted main theme conjures images of swirling dancers in a ballroom, while a pensive middle section provides a beautiful respite. Before long the momentum picks up as the carefree waltz theme returns, driving the music forward to a sparkling conclusion.
