The popular Swiss Rolls snack has been recalled across the United States due to a possible salmonella outbreak.

The recalled Swiss Rolls are sold under a number of brand names: Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker’s Treat, Market Square, and Great Value are the brand names distributed nationwide.

Another brand, Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread, is distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Flowers Foods said the recall was “due to the potential presence of Salmonella in an ingredient, whey powder.”

“The ingredient recall was initiated by a third-party whey powder manufacturer and supplier. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled items,” the company stated.

Salmonella affects hundreds of thousands of people in the United States every year, with the latest outbreak linked to turkey.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a federal agency, estimates that salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses every year, with around 23,000 people needing hospitalization and 450 people dying annually fro the illness.

Food is the primary source of salmonella.

People can institute a number of food safety measures to attempt to prevent salmonella, including cooking meat and eggs thoroughly and washing hands, surfaces, and utensils that have been in contact with raw meat immediately after the contact.

Symptoms include diarrhea and fever, and a test is required to confirm the presence of the illness.
