Police on Wednesday described the dramatic moment that a man tried carjacking multiple people at a gas station, wrestling one woman on the ground for her keys.

Surveillance footage from the station in Wallingford, Connecticut, has now been released, showing the moment a passerby intervenes, trying to kick the assailant off the woman.

Police arrested and charged Juan Laporte, 32, over the incident.

The woman had gone over to help Laporte after his car crashed on the road, according to WWLP, and had then driven him to the local gas station, intending to call the police.

When they got there, Laporte tried to take her car.

After this failed carjacking attempt, caught in the video above, Laporte got into another man’s car as he was pumping gas.

The car owner clung to the steering wheel as Laporte tried to drive the car away.

After trying to shake the man by driving back and forth from the road to the garage a few times, he crashed the car, and then tried to run away.

Three passersby were then able to pin him to the ground until the police arrived. Laporte has been charged with larceny, reckless endangerment, assault, breach of peace, criminal mischief, carjacking, criminal attempt to commit robbery, criminal attempt to commit larceny, reckless driving, and interfering/resisting arrest.
