On Saturday, Egypt’s Supreme Administrative Court overturned a 2008 lower court ban on gas exports to Israel.

The Court said the ruling was out of the lower court’s jurisdiction. The court also ruled that Egypt must regulate the price and quantity of gas sold to Israel and ensure Egypt’s domestic energy needs are met before gas is exported.

The ban was originally put in place because Egypt was selling gas to Israel at lower than market prices. Gas sales to Israel did not stop after the 2008 ruling, because the ban was appealed by the Egyptian government and “pending a review.” The Supreme Court ruling has met with opposition among many Egyptians who disagree with Israeli policies in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
