A sulcata tortoise is Inception star Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest pet, costing him a cool $400, according to celebrity news website TMZ.com.
DiCaprio bought the 10-year-old tortoise at the North American Reptile Breeders Conference and Trade Show in Anaheim, California this past weekend, according to TMZ.
The sulcata tortoise, or African Spurred Tortoise, is a species of mainland tortoise that originated in the Sahara desert in Africa. Its “sulcata” name is from the Latin “sulcus” which means “furrow,” referring to the grooves on the tortoise’s back.
TMZ’s sources say DiCaprio’s tortoise weighs 38 pounds, which is light considering adult sulcata tortoises usually weigh 70 to 100 pounds. Sulcatas can also live for up to 80 years.
