A stray pit bull saved a woman who was being attacked by a man in Tennessee.

The dog went after the attacker, who stabbed the pit bull with a knife several times.

After the dog drove away the man, officers who responded took the dog in for veterinary care, and named it “Hero.”

“I don’t think we could have let that dog suffer and die,” officer Timothy Clay told ABC7. “We felt like we needed to get that dog some help after what it had been through.”

The dog was taken to a local vet, almost dying twice during surgery, the ABC report said.

Carla Welch, the owner of a pit bull rescue organization helped raise money to pay for the dog’s medical expenses. She now cares for the animal.

“I thought he was very courageous and brave. He was totally a stranger to these people,” she said of Hero.

The dog has now been put up for adoption. Welch added, “For those two officers to go to the extent they did to save him is very heroic and very awesome,” according to WISH-TV.

“He has had a really rough life. He has had a bum back leg and a bum front leg, but he gets around fine and he’s looking for a good friend,” said Welch.
