[xtypo_dropcap]A[/xtypo_dropcap]n office building is up for grabs in Columbia, S.C. The city is giving away the building to anyone who wants it on the condition that the recipient haul it away at their own expense.

The building was constructed in the 1930s to be used as an apartment but was later turned into an office building. The city now wants to use the location for a new parking lot.

“We are offering it first to anyone who wants to come and move it,” city Councilwoman Belinda Gergel told local TV station WIS. “They can have it at no cost for the building, but they'll have to pay for the moving cost.”

The plan is supported by the Historic Columbia Foundation, which acknowledges that the building has little historic value.

According to the state, the estimated cost of removing the building is $100,000 depending on how far the building is moved. Located in the popular Five Points shopping area, the building was bought by the city 18 months ago. It will be demolished if authorities don’t receive requests by the end of the month.

City Manager Steve Gantt acknowledged to the state that even he believes that “it’s a long shot” that anyone will take the offer.
