WASHINGTON—The Kennedy Center Opera House had an excited audience on March 21 as Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company brought to D.C.’s stage 5,000 years of ancient Chinese Civilization.

Among the appreciative theatergoers was ’show business producer' and former ABC TV journalist, Marie Frances.

“Oh, it’s wonderful. It definitely shows the Chinese culture,” she said noting the “gracefulness and beauty” of the performance.

“The chorus lines are absolutely perfect, just absolutely perfect,” she added.

Ms Frances said she had spent time in Taiwan and in China in her role as a producer and had produced a number of television shows on Chinese costuming and robes.

Shen Yun, a New York based company, has as its mission to restore Chinese traditional culture.
According to the Shen Yun website, “Shen Yun’s costume artists collect countless designs of traditional attire, ranging from those of emperors, ministers, and generals to the everyday clothing of the common people. They use bright colors to tailor and recreate hundreds of new pieces each season.”

At the core of Shen Yun’s performance is classical Chinese dance but Shen Yun also combines visual artists, choreographers, musicians and vocalists.

For Ms. Francis the most meaningful part of the show was Shen Yun’s presentation of the truth about what is currently going on in China, and how this relates to the attempted eradication of China’s culture and traditions by the Communist Party. She referred to the dance The Choice which depicts the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China today and the difficult choices Chinese people must make to stand up for their principles.

“I think you should put in more messages about what’s happening in China right now. The Choice was very powerful and I liked it very much because it was very honest,” she said.

“There are no human rights in China right now … people have to know that there are no human rights in China and that people are suffering.”

“So that was a very important part of the show and I liked that very, very much and that’s the message for me,” Ms Frances said, adding,“I enjoyed it and I thank you so much.”
