VIENNA, Austria—A group of 13 Bulgarians of various ages and occupations traveled to the Austrian capital with one aim, to see the spectacular Shen Yun Performing Arts show on April 5. All of them gave glowing reviews of the performance and wished for the show to come to Bulgaria next year.
Ms. Velinova works as a psychologist in a governmental institution in Bulgaria. She was very touched by the performance Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution. In the vignette, a father living in China is persecuted by the government for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual practice. This performance demonstrated an ancient Chinese belief that good is rewarded and evil is punished, even if not in this lifetime.
Her teenage daughter said she was overjoyed by the vivid program, Dance of Yi, which features dancers with colorful billowing rainbow dresses, which reflects the exuberance of the Yi culture. She said she liked very much the combination of colors of the costumes that flowed with the dancer’s movements.
Ms. Arapjan, a university student, heard of the show from her friend. She said the show was grand and very expressive with bright colours.
She learned a lot about Chinese culture and was impressed with the presentation of the 5,000-year-old traditional culture. Ms. Arapjan found the Chinese perception of good and evil is quite different from the Western view.
Mr. Georgiev, a computer engineer, said the show was exceptional. He said in his opinion the technique of the dancers was superb with very difficult leaps and spins.
The demeanour of the emcees created a lightheartedness in the audience, which he enjoyed. Mr. Georgiev particularly noted that the dance Mulan Joins the Battle was great and found it quite easy to understand loyalty expressed in days of old. He was very touched by the orchestra and the erhu [a two-stringed instrument].
Ms. Simeonova, a taxation expert, was very happy to attend the show and said that she would never forget it. During the show, she said she cried and laughed with the dance, Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution.
The facial expressions of the dancers also touched her, the stories were very well portrayed, and she empathised with the emotions in every performance, without knowing the full story.
Ms. Simeonova said that Shen Yun is a once in a lifetime experience, and that those who can see it are most fortunate.
She said, “The script-writer of the show is certainly very talented. I have no words to express my joy and gratitude to be able to see this show.”
Last year, the Shen Yun debut in Bulgaria was canceled due to pressure from the Chinese embassy in Sofia.
