PHOENIX—Shen Yun Performing Arts completed its last of three shows in the Phoenix area on Saturday evening, March 28 to another enthusiastic crowd. By the end of the performance, the audience stood up and gave the performers an ovation.

Bhavani Debi, an artist who paints and photographs, attended the show with Randall Harrison, a jeweler. Both were struck by the performance.

Mr. Harrison said the show is “profoundly powerful and beautiful in the extreme.” He noted that the visuals, costumes, music, choreography, and the spirituality all contributed to create the effect.

Indeed, the performance is a treat for the eyes, ears, and soul. With its live orchestra that combines classical Western and Chinese instruments, its acclaimed vocalists and instrumentalists, its elaborately-costumed dancers, and its dramatization of ancient Chinese legends, it’s very stirring.

Ms. Debi felt she could learn from the performance. She said, “I paint Buddhas and Chinese calligraphy, so this is very inspirational. I love the colors and the costumes. It’s given me a lot of inspiration for [my] artwork.”

Her favorite performance was The Udumbara’s Bloom, about the legendary Udumbara flower of Buddhist lore that blossoms once every 3,000 years. She said she plans to paint a Buddha with the Udumbara flower in its hand in the near future.
