NEW YORK—Nanci Callahan, founder and managing director of the West Side Cultural Center, said that watching Shen Yun perform at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Jan. 16, was an unforgettable experience.

“I loved it. I loved it ... Extremely special. I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Ms. Callahan after watching the performance.

“The costumes are beautiful, the dances are wonderful,” she said.

Shen Yun was founded in New York in 2006 with the mission to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture. Since it’s inception Shen Yun has become a global phenomenon. The company has performed for millions of people around the world.

Ms. Callahan said that her experience producing environmental, educational, and cultural programs over the past 25 years made her appreciate the Shen Yun performance even more.

“I very much appreciate the work that has gone into this,” she said.

The performance features award-winning classical Chinese dancers, solo vocalists who perform all original pieces, and an orchestra that is quite unique in the world in that it includes both classical Western and classical Chinese instruments.

Part of Shen Yun’s performances are mini drama pieces that draw inspiration on China’s rich history.

“It was dramatic, but exciting. I am so glad to see it, so glad to be here,” she said.

Ms. Callahan said she appreciated that each of the pieces is accompanied by a short introduction.

“I think many of us don’t have the knowledge of the history. But it is very nice to have it introduced,” she said.

Ms. Callahan said she wants to watch the company perform again.

“It’s unique. This is something I'll never forget. I want to come back,” she said.
