GENEVA—Throughout her career as a composer, lyricist, and publisher, Francesca Aeschlimann has worked with the likes of Petula Clark, Jermaine Jackson, and Valeriya, who has been called Russia’s Madonna, to name just a few.

On Thursday night, it was Ms. Aeschlimann who was treated to an artistic experience that has been marvelled at around the world.

“I am just someone who loves arts, music, in all of its forms, and this was an amazing piece of art that we saw tonight.”

Ms. Aeschlimann was commenting on Shen Yun Performing Arts, a New York-based company that presents classical Chinese dance and music, which has started the European leg of it global tour in Geneva’s Bâtiment des Forces Motrices.

“I feel the colors; it is light, it is beauty, it is full of opening your heart and opening all these different emotions that we hold in our hearts. It is the opening of the light,” Ms. Aeschlimann said.

“Art is an expression of everything we suffer and everything we feel and everything we love. So it is sadness expressed, it is joy, and it is all the emotions that come together.”

That may be all the more so for Shen Yun, as classical Chinese dance, an ancient art-form grounded in 5,000 years of China’s divinely inspired culture and built upon a deep foundation of traditional aesthetics, is rich with expressive power.

“Through expression of bearing and form, beautiful dance movements bring out the inner meaning of intrinsic thoughts and feelings, reflecting the peculiarities of human nature, the standard for human conduct, moral concept, mental state, one’s value system, and so on,” explains Shen Yun’s website about classical Chinese dance.

When it comes to the arts, Ms. Aeschlimann said, here should be no boundaries, and one should just see the art for the hard work and great talent that the performers are presenting to the world.

“It is very touching to see such a giving—because they are giving so much—this is a lot of work to arrive to this point to do such a dance and to be able to present such a fantastic piece of art,” Ms. Aeschlimann said.
