KAWAGUCHI, Japan—Business leaders and designers said they felt very happy after attending Shen Yun Performing Arts on Jan. 19 in Kawaguchi, Japan. A company president repeatedly used the word “incomparable” to describe New York-based Shen Yun.

“From the beginning to the end, every moment is amazing. I really appreciated the performance,” said Mr. Nakazono Akihiro, the president of a floor-cleaning machine company. “It’s incomparable.”

Mr. Nakazono said he obtained happiness after attending Shen Yun.

“Listening to the orchestra playing and watching the dancers’ dancing, I was really very happy,” he said. “If I have a chance to attend Shen Yun again, I will be too happy.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company and has in recent years set a new bar for the art form internationally.

“Shen Yun is very sharp!” said Mr. Kubo Hiroshi, a social dance teacher. He attended Shen Yun with his wife Mrs. Kubo Mie, who is also a dance teacher, and son Kubo Yusuke.

“The show is amazing. It has so many great factors. It’s very sharp,” he said. “I like all the programs.”

In detail, he explained: “The costumes present unique glorious color schemes ... the dancers are excellent and very well coordinated ... the backdrop is fantastic. It surprised me.”

Mr. Kubo said there were several times when the dancers suddenly jumped from the stage into the backdrop, and some figures in the backdrop landed on the stage and became the dancers. This backdrop is a unique piece of technology and set design that Shen Yun holds a patent for.

“This is very special and difficult. Others cannot copy from Shen Yun,” Mr. Kubo said.

Mrs. Kubo was amazed by the dancers’ skills and techniques.

“They are well-trained. I was shocked when I saw their dances cooperate with the music so harmoniously,” she said. “Without any words, the dancers only used their bodies to express the stories. And all of us received it with deep understanding.”

Each Shen Yun performance consists of nearly 20 vignettes, presented through highly-expressive art forms such as classical Chinese dance, original orchestral music performed live, soloists who sing in the bel canto tradition, animated digital backdrops, and more.

Appreciation for Culture

Mr. Alexander Kiwitz, a German stage designer, enjoyed Shen Yun.

“The stage in this theater is normal. But Shen Yun changed it into a wonderful and beautiful land by using the lights, backdrop, choreography, and artists performing,” he said. “The scenes on stage are very very beautiful.”

Mr. Kiwitz liked the culture that Shen Yun presents.

“I received the message of respecting the divine beings. This is very important. People need beliefs, cultures, and values. These can unite us,” he said.

Mr. Kiwitz was surprised that he understood all programs that Shen Yun presented, without any explanation in English or German. “I was deeply touched,” he said.

Shen Yun has a mission to show the beauty and goodness of the 5,000 years of China’s civilization. Chinese culture was built on values and virtues from the spiritual teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, virtues like loyalty, propriety, wisdom, justice, and benevolence—values that are universal and shared the world over.

‘Very Strong Energy’

Mr. Shimamura Taro is a management consultant who has worked with well known companies. He said Shen Yun is very special because he felt strong energy when he listened to the music and felt the divine nature of the show.

“Especially the vocal soloists. They brought me very strong energy. It’s very special,” he said. “I felt there were divine beings [on the stage].”

Mr. Shimamura believed that Shen Yun told audiences that humans should believe in divine beings.

“The messages that Shen Yun delivered are bright and positive,” he said. “Some programs presented divine beings. They made me believe that the dancers must have strong faith. This is the reason why they can spread the energy to us.”

Mr. Shimamura said it’s very interesting and enjoyable to attend Shen Yun.

Shen Yun Performing Arts World Company has finished its three performances in Kawaguchi this season. It will perform next in Utsumoniya, Tokyo, and Nagoya before going to South Korea.
