FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts returned to Florida tonight with the first of two performances at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. This is the third consecutive year that Shen Yun, formerly called Divine Performing Arts, has performed in Florida.

Letters of greeting from federal, state, and local officials, including Gov. Charlie Crist and U.S. Sens. Bill Nelson and George S. LeMieux honored the occasion.

John Seiler, mayor of Fort Lauderdale, wrote, “We are excited to have Shen Yun Performing Arts here in Fort Lauderdale for a third consecutive year and we can’t wait for them to showcase traditional Chinese customs through music and dance.”

Judy Paul, mayor of the town of Davie, in Broward County, issued a proclamation honoring Shen Yun’s mission of rediscovering and presenting “the essence of true, traditional Chinese culture” and bringing to the world art that “celebrates human dignity and positives.”

The proclamation recognizes the event for celebrating “the pure excellence and grandeur of classical Chinese dance and music, inspired by the myths, legends and divine beauty of 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.”

Marilyn Gerber, mayor of Coconut Creek, in Broward County, also sent congratulations, and expressed appreciation for the “values and the beauty expressed by the Shen Yun Performances.”

At intermission of the debut performance, Dr. Wald who practices Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in Fort Lauderdale, and his wife, expressed their enjoyment.

His wife, Mrs. Wald was enthralled. “I think it’s absolutely beautiful, it’s like the dancers are floating on the air.”

She said the panoramic backdrop scenes that interacted with stage performances were “gorgeous.” It made me think that maybe I had lived a past life in China.”

Dr. Wald enjoyed the groundbreaking orchestral fusion of Western and Eastern composition. “The music is just beautiful and it compliments the dancing, it’s just a pleasure, emotional-it’s very nice.”

He was thinking how his children might have liked to have seen the show. “I think that it’s so colorful ... and the dancing, the music. Even though they’re so young I think they would really enjoy it, I really do.”

Mrs. Wald agreed saying the show held “an important lesson for the kids too to know that people in China are oppressed.”

She was referring to the vignette Nothing Can Block the Divine Path, a story that tells the plight of Falun Dafa practitioners being persecuted in China for their faith.

But for her, the performance thus far was “uplifting.”

Shen Yun’s New York company is touring Florida with performances in three cities on both coasts. The New York company is one of three touring companies, each one featuring its own orchestra that produces a unique blend of classical Western and Chinese instruments.

The second of two shows in Ft. Lauderdale will be Jan. 27, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, followed by St. Petersburg, with two performances on Jan. 29 at the Mahaffey Theater, and Jacksonville, Jan. 30 and 31, at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts.
