FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—As a retired international businessman, Mr. Jesus Sanchez believes that Shen Yun Performing Arts could help Westerners better understand China and clear up misconceptions.

“I think we need to know more. We need to have more interaction like this because that’s the way that you know a country. That’s the way you know the people of the country,” he said.

Ms. Sanchez and his wife attended Broward Center for the Performing arts to see the celebrated traditional Chinese culture as presented by New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company.

Shen Yun performances of classical Chinese dance and musical scores reflect the virtues and wisdom of 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture, according to the company’s website.

Before retiring, Mr. Sanchez was senior vice president at Remy International Inc. and president at Remy Power Products LLC. He was on the board of directors at Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association.

“I think it’s beautiful,” Mr. Sanchez said of the performance. The color, the composition of the digital backdrops throughout the dances, and the stories are excellent, he said. “The music was wonderful.”

“The dancers are wonderful performers. I really enjoyed it. My wife and I are having a tremendous time.”

Having grown up in Spain and France, Mr. Sanchez has seen a good deal of cultural performances. The Sanchezes enjoy ballet and felt they would also enjoy something different. This has “much more color and [is] much more lively—so very enjoyable,” he said.

Intrigued by Shen Yun promotional material, the couple decided to attend. Mr. Sanchez felt that the performance lived up to the beauty of the advertisement: “The use of colors is so rich. You don’t see that, you know.”

Shen Yun is known for its dazzling costumes, spanning dynasties through history and ethnicities across the broad country of China.

He also felt the music was wonderful. Shen Yun tours with a live orchestra that marries Western instruments found in symphonic orchestras with traditional Chinese instruments that give the music its Chinese flavor and melody.

Underlying the beauty of the physical performance, Mr. Sanchez saw a spiritual element: “You can see in all the stories, everything has … a higher element and a much higher spirit going, moving forward and transcending in whatever you do.”
