The State Emergency Service (SES) warns Victoria faces its worst weather event in 15 years. Severe flooding in Victoria and South Australia could force thousands to flee their homes over the weekend as storms continue to batter the region.

SES Spokesmen Matt Maywald cautioned people living in flood prone areas to take extra care as a flood watch is current for many parts of the State.

The already saturated grounds provide ideal conditions for floods which could cause flooding problems for months, warns the SES.

“Floods and storms have the potential to cause major damage. People do not always realise how important it is to consider the impact of floods and storms,” said Mr Maywald.

The SES has responded to more than 970 calls for help mostly due to flash flooding, says an ABC report.

Residents in Victoria’s north east received warning messages on their phones today about rising waters, sent out by the state’s emergency alert system, which was set up in the wake of the Black Friday bush fires.

Several areas are experiencing heavy rain and local flooding. The weather bureau forecast an increase in wind strength as the system moves towards the south-east.

About 13,000 people are awaiting restoration of power supplies across the region.

The SES reminds the public to telephone 132 500 if they require SES assistance for incidents such as fallen trees, flooding, storm damage or similar.
