The search continues for 51-year-old Air New Zealand pilot Steve Morrissey who went missing in Hong Kong five days ago.

TVNZ reported that Hong Kong police will search for the missing pilot until at least the end of Wednesday.

Morrissey went missing last Wednesday, Aug. 4, tramping with pilot Captain Mark Apperley on the Wilson trail in Hong Kong’s New Territories.

According to Bloomberg’s Businessweek, some 200 rescue workers searched for Morrissey over the weekend, using helicopters, boats and sniffer dogs.

Air New Zealand deputy chief executive Norm Thompson made a new statement today, Aug. 9: “With the start of the working week, the number of rescue volunteers will be fewer, but a team well in excess of 100 have this morning continued the search of a large area of the trail,” Businessweek reported.

Thompson said in a statement last week the Kiwi pilot was hiking with Apperley and failed to arrive at a meeting point the two had agreed upon after Apperley stopped to rest.

Hong Kong police spokesman Terence Lee said by telephone today, without giving further detail, they are still looking for him, Bloomberg reported.

An old Army mate, who gave his name only as Tom, told the NZ Herald he has hopes pinned on the missing pilot’s survival skills.

“In the early 80s, Steve flew Iroquois helicopters in Singapore and Malaysia for two years with the Air Force, which required specific jungle survival training for that region, not just survival training in New Zealand.

“Hong Kong would have similar conditions, with heat exhaustion and dehydration being particular issues,” Tom said in the Herald report.
