NEW YORK—Sen. Charles Schumer revealed a bill on Sunday that would lift the restrictions on cellphone telemarketing. The Mobile Information Call Act, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Lee Terry, would revoke the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and, with it, protections from telemarketers that cellphone users have enjoyed since 1991. The act would allow private companies to use auto-dialing programs to contact cellphone users with pre-recorded calls.

“This bill is a Trojan horse for private companies, who, under the guise of ‘providing information,’ are seeking to scale the walls of protection we have already put in place to protect consumers from having their cellphones deluged by telemarketers,” stated Schumer in a press release.

Some 83 percent of Americans use cellphones, according to a 2011 Pew Research Center Report.
