City school bus drivers, who shuttle children to school and back, voted late on Tuesday to authorize a strike.

The authorization means the drivers, who are members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181, can hold a strike against bus contractors for the New York City Department of Education.

According to an Associated Press report, not only drivers could strike, but also mechanics and escorts. The decision arose over union workers’ desire for health care benefits which union leaders say may run out in the next several years due to the ailing economy.

ATU Local 1181 President Michael Cordiello said drivers will continue working their jobs but will strike if unions and the contractors can’t strike a deal.
