Singer/songwriter/fiddle player Sara Watkins is best known as a founding member of bluegrass band Nickel Creek. Here she strides out on her own with this assured solo debut.

Produced by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, this is alt country at its finest, with Watkins singing about workin’ on the barges, reconciled relationships, faith and, um, ponies. Classic country motifs then.

The album consists of covers, blistering instrumentals and Watkins’ own charming compositions, with a cast of fine musicians backing her up. It’s tricky to pick a standout, as she displays such musical confidence they all sparkle with her deft touch. An effervescent debut.
