Government officials, artists, scientists, and scholars praised the 2008 performances. An official from Taiwan was impressed by the way the show celebrates the rich and diverse heritage of China.
“The show is very impressive,” said Mr. Chen. “It very nicely represents the traditions of Chinese culture.”
Over one hundred artists from Divine Performing Arts, a New York based company, came to San Francisco. Many of the group play instruments in the ground-breaking orchestra, which combines classical Western and Chinese instruments. More than 60 dancers and a few vocalists portrayed events and historical characters accompanied by the orchestra.
Mr. Chen was impressed by the visual and cultural display as well as the traditional performing techniques, but what really struck a chord was the show’s recognition of all ethnic groups of China.
“What I understood from the show is that it is designed to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year with all Chinese ethnic groups all around the world. It also takes the opportunity to introduce Western society to Chinese classical dance and vocal performances, which were all very impressive.”
The artists brought to life on stage China’s divinely-inspired dances rooted in 5,000 years of civilization.
“The team of performers recommends to us that we need to learn truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. These are the principles that they were trying to teach us, and that’s the message that I got from the show,” said Mr. Chen.
“I’ll definitely take with me the impressions of the colors, costumes, the beautiful backgrounds and the great stories depicted in the show.”
