Rescuing a Sea Cow From a Life Saver
A sea cow’s natural curiosity might have been its undoing—if it hadn’t been for the persistence of some human beings, who spent hours trying to free it from a life jacket.
Video footage shows rescuers struggling to free the animal in Florida waterways.
The manatee, or sea cow, was first spotted by a fireboat crew in the Intracoastal Waterway in Florida, who noticed it had got caught in a bright orange life jacket.
The Fort Lauderdale crew chased the sea cow up and down the channel, but with no luck, as the animal dived when people attempted to gently remove the jacket.
When it swam into Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC) took over the rescue effort.
“They are very curious animals so they will play with items left in the water, but we’re not sure how it got on there,” Amber Howell, a biologist with the FWC told CBSMiami. “It seemed to be a perfect fit.”
