Reporter Thwarts Daring Escape of Groundhog ‘Shubenacadie Sam’
Upon making his prediction, Shubenacadie Sam had something special up his sleeve this year. Just as he was trotting around his snowy pen, the groundhog decided to make a run for it.
It quickly climbed up the fence, but just as he was about to pass over the top, CBC reporter Brett Ruskin rushed in and grabbed the animal with one hand, while holding a camera with the other.
The reporter suffered a minor injury, while Sam appeared to survive unscathed.
Shubenacadie Sam maybe isn’t as well known as Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil, but because he lives in the Atlantic Time Zone in Nova Scotia, Canada, he’s the first one to share his prognostication every year on Groundhog Day (Feb. 2), according to the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park, where he lives.
As opposed to Phil, Sam didn’t see his shadow this year, meaning he predicted an early spring.
