NEW YORK—U.S. Congressman Charles Rangel said Wednesday he will temporarily step down as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Rep. Rangel, a longstanding Democrat representing Harlem, had questions brought against him that he used his name and prestige to raise money for a college named after him.

He also allegedly did not disclose that he had hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets.

The House Ethics Committee last week said that Rep. Rangel took two corporate funded vacations to the Caribbean, which they say, goes against House rules.

Rangel said in an NY1 report that he stepped down in the interim so that other House Democrats won’t have to answer questions about the charges.
