[xtypo_dropcap]T[/xtypo_dropcap]he number of journalists jailed around the world has reached a 14-year high, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) announced on Wednesday.

In total, the organization has records of 145 reporters, editors, and photojournalists who are behind bars.

China and Iran each top the list with 34 journalists imprisoned. “Both China and Iran rely heavily on the use of vague anti-state charges,” according to a CPJ statement.

To date, several Epoch Times staff remain imprisoned in China. In December 2000, more than 30 staff members were arrested inside China, and over the last few years, Epoch Times columnists in China have also been arrested.

In China, the CPJ reports a 40 percent increase in the number of journalists imprisoned this year.

“The increase in the number of journalists jailed around the world is a shocking development,” said CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon in a statement.

“It is fueled largely by a small handful of countries that systematically jail journalists—countries that are at war with information itself,” he said.
