NEW YORK—The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation was scheduled to seek authorization from the Franchise and Concession Review Committee on Wednesday, Dec. 14 to amend an existing agreement and add nine tennis courts on Randall’s Island to the existing 20. The meeting was cancelled.
According to an e-mail from Geoffrey Croft, a representative from NYC Park Advocates, the meeting has “been withdrawn after a number of elected officials were expected to oppose the expansion.”
The authorization would amend a license agreement between Sportime NY and Randall’s Island Sports Foundation. Sportime NY built a $19 million, 160,000-square-foot tennis facility on Randall’s Island. According to a letter from Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito, the local community has voiced concerns that they are not benefited by the courts.
