Queen Rania of Jordan was a strong advocate for education and women’s rights at the UN Assembly to discuss the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in New York last week.

Two of these goals are universal primary education (MDG 2), and gender equality and women’s empowerment (MDG 3). These form the foundation for building the other goals, according to Queen Rania.

“On the one hand, they represent a quarter of the MDGs, on the other, they represent the whole,” said Her Majesty at the MDG Innovative Financing meeting, according to a press release.

“Because if every child around the world was in school and every woman and girl was educated and active in their communities then 2+3 could underpin success in all other development challenges.”

The Queen has founded organizations in Jordan and abroad to help realize these two MDGs, and was recognized as a global leader in these areas at the UN Assembly.

Her Majesty also initiated the “1GOAL: Education for All” campaign, actively supported by FIFA. During the World Cup, soccer stars and other celebrities promoted the 1GOAL campaign in the name of children worldwide who are not in school.

“Education is an emergency unfolding virtually unnoticed by all,“ she said at the meeting. ”All except the 70 million out-of-school-children, and the 300 million receiving sub-standard education worldwide.”

Queen Rania is also the founder of the Jordan River Foundation (JRF). Together with private investors and villages, the Foundation works to improve health, education and overall living standards in Jordan. Among JRF projects was safety improvement at a local girl’s school in the village of Ajloun.

The Queen especially advocates the power of education to change the lot of women in the developing world.

At the Women: Inspiration and Enterprise (WIE) Symposium, held last week alongside the UN Assembly events, Her Majesty received the award for leadership in promoting the rights of women around the globe.

In her website’s Mission statement, the Queen discusses the impact education can have on a girl’s future:

“It can rescue a girl from the burdens of adulthood: early marriage and premature pregnancy. It can empower a woman to take control of her life: mind, body, and soul. It can defeat disease and temper intolerance: a shield for both our health and our humanity.”
