PORTLAND, Ore.—Mr. Jim Lockhart, a public talk show host, thought that the Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Spectacular was magnificent. He was among the audience members that saw the show in the Keller Auditorium in Portland on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
“I didn’t have any expectations, because I didn’t want to dampen what I would see, and there was no way I could have imagined or even conceived the magnificence of the different costumes and all of the different colors, and the dances were just incredible, I thoroughly enjoyed it,” Mr. Lockhart said.
Mr. Lockhart liked most the dance Persecuted on a Sacred Path. “I liked the one where they were wearing everyday clothes, and [there] was religious persecution. … I think for present-day people and I responded to that,” Mr. Lockhart said.
He also enjoyed the performance The Poet’s Vision about China’s most celebrated poet, Li Bai, as well as the performance Dance of the Snow-Capped Mountain, a Tibetan dance with long sleeves, sturdy boots, and colorful prayer beads.’ “It’s not that I didn’t respond to all the others from the drunken poet to the sleeves—all the different, the colorful, just the poetry of the motion was just wonderful as well.
“I am somewhat familiar with Chinese culture a little bit from the past, reading history, but this kind of made the connections between the people and the government and the kings and also their love of the spiritual path. It kind of brought that all together in a way that I had never thought about before,” Mr. Lockhart said.
Overall he was very impressed with the show. “From an artistic standpoint, I think that it was the very highest excellent of artistic because of the music, the dance, and the composition of the colors of the costumes. The way they were put together was not anything I have ever experienced before,” Mr. Lockhart said.
In the performance The Udumbara’s Bloom, the dancers wore matching spring costumes and fans. “The colors were composed differently, and they matched, it just wasn’t matches that I think I would have ever seen before,” Mr. Lockhart said.
