President Trump Remembers His Late Mom Mary Anne on Mother’s Day: ‘I Miss Her A Lot’

May 21, 2019 Updated: May 21, 2019

President Donald Trump frequently speaks with pride about his late father, the successful real estate developer Frederick Christ Trump. Remarks about the president’s mother, on the other hand, are fewer and further between, but we’ve reason to believe that the love is strong. Mother’s Day 2019 provided the perfect opportunity for the president, along with the rest of us, to pay homage to his one and only wonderful mom.

The president and his first lady made some heartfelt remarks at the celebration of military mothers and spouses event at the White House on Mother’s Day; Melania shared a beautiful photo. Trump, in particular, recognized his beloved mom, Mary Anne MacLeod-Trump, in a speech that paid homage to the true focus of this important day.

The president is no stranger to heartfelt Mother’s Day speeches. In 2018, the president candidly shared his thoughts on Twitter in a video that 3.6 million viewers have enjoyed. “Since the earliest days of our republic,” Trump began, “America’s strength has come from the love and courage and devotion of our mothers.” Describing his own mother as a “great person,” the president continued: “I learned so much from my mother. She was just incredible.” She was “warm, loving, really smart, could be tough if she had to be,” the president admitted, “but basically she was a really nice person.”

“So much of what I’ve done and so much of what I’ve become is because of my mother.”

Fascinatingly, Trump’s ancestors on his mother’s side originate from Scotland. Mary Anne MacLeod was born on May 10, 1912, in Tong, a remote fishing community in the Outer Hebrides. She immigrated to the United States in 1930 where she reportedly met her future husband at a dance; the pair fell in love, married in 1936, and raised five children together. Mary Anne became a naturalized citizen in March of 1942 at the hands of the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, according to The New Yorker.

Speaking of his mother’s homeland, Trump regaled: “Her loyalty to Scotland was incredible. She respected and loved the Queen.”

In the 1930 census, Mary Anne’s occupation is listed as “maid” or “domestic,” although the budding philanthropist became something of a social butterfly and worked hard for several humanitarian organizations, including those serving cerebral palsy and intellectually disabled adults.

Mary Anne died in the year 2000 at the age of 88, long before her son’s now-infamous ascent to the top of the political ladder, but she lived long enough to experience his success in the world of business. She is buried in a cemetery in New Hyde Park, New York, next to her husband.

In his 1987 book The Art of the Deal, Trump spoke fondly of his most beloved female role model. “She always had a flair for the dramatic and grand,” he wrote. “She was a very traditional housewife, but she also had a sense of the world beyond her.” In his 1997 co-written memoir The Art of the Comeback, the loving son again referred to “my incredible mother, Mary Trump,” and described her as “smart as hell.”

For Mother’s Day 2019, Donald Trump posted a touching message for mothers everywhere on his personal, official Instagram account. The accompanying picture was simple and elegant: a garden full of cheerful yellow tulips.

“I miss her a lot,” the president shared. “I say this to you as I think about my mother: Happy Mother’s Day, and God bless the United States of America.”
