The 4-month-old baby who died late last month has been identified and more details surrounding his death have been released.
Hannibal Oceja was just a few days shy of turning 5 months old when he died at Sunrise Hospital on Feb. 25.
Police said the initial investigation showed he was severely malnourished.
When the baby was pronounced dead, he weighed only 5 pounds.
Doctors said there were no bruises on the boy’s body but his gums were white, indicating that he was suffering from dehydration, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The boy’s mother claimed she breast-fed her son up to four times per day for about 45 minutes each time at their home located near the 5700 block of East Hacienda Avenue.
Loreana told police she suffered from post-partum depression, but had stopped taking medicine for it just after one week. She said her husband sometimes smoked marijuana after her children were asleep, but denied any drug or alcohol abuse, FOX Carolina reported.
Oceja, the boy’s father told police that he never physically disciplined his children, adding that he was also a victim of child abuse.
The pattern of neglect continued with the couple’s pets. Investigators found they owned four dogs, three which were abnormally thin pit bulls with the ribs and spines visible from a distance. The fourth dog, a terrier mix, was in acceptable condition.
Oceja told police that he did not have enough money to feed the dogs. They were turned over to the Clark County Animal Control.
The family had no previous history with Child Protective Services, according to police.
