The date for new presidential elections in Poland have been set for June 20. Elections were triggered when Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski tragically died on April 10 in a plane crash in Russia along with 95 other senior polish officials.

The date was announced on Wednesday by Poland’s speaker of parliament, Bronislaw Komorowski, who is currently acting as interim president in accordance with Polish Constitution.

Komorowski himself is expected to be one of the two main candidates along with the twin brother of the deceased president.

Before the tragedy, elections were originally planned for the autumn, but according to the Polish Constitution the interim president must call for new elections within two weeks of his appointment and then be held in the next two months.

President Kaczynski and his wife Maria were buried in the historic Wawel Cathedral in Krakow in a large state funeral last Sunday.
