Philadelphia Phillies v New York Mets

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed third baseman Placido Polanco on the disabled list with what they’re calling lower back inflammation, retroactive to Monday, according to a report on Major League Baseball’s website.

Polanco could be back as early as August 7.

The 36-year-old Polanco is hitting just .255 this year, though he is a career .299 hitter. His defense at the hot corner has kept up his value to the Phillies though as replacement Ty Wiggington has committed three errors in three games in his absence.

Earlier this season Polanco recorded his 2,000th career hit in a career that has spanned 15 seasons for three different teams.

Philadelphia, mired in last place in the suddenly competitive NL East at 45-54, has yet to announce a replacement on the roster for Polanco.
