[xtypo_dropcap]“I[/xtypo_dropcap]n these difficult times, we need to look under every stone to cut back on agencies with overlapping functions or agencies whose function could either cease to exist or simply be performed more efficiently by other means,” said Ontario finance minister Dwight Duncan in regards to the government’s $19 billion deficit, according to CBC.

The Liberals aim to eliminate 12 out of 259 government agencies and the benefits that public servants receive on behalf of taxpayer’s and ratepayer’s money. Duncan wants to eliminate perks like golf club and gym memberships as well as tickets to sporting events, as executive luxuries. This would include employees of hospitals, universities, Ontario government agencies, and direct civil service.

“We need to do a sunset review process on all agencies, boards, commissions, and government programs to justify their ongoing value, and if they can’t, you close them down,” Duncan told CBC.
