Less than an hour after U.S. military forces began launching cruise missiles on Libyan air defenses, President Obama said Gadhafi needs to face the consequences of his actions.

Speaking at a press conference broadcast live from Brazil Saturday at about 5:10 pm local time, Obama said he is very aware of the risks of any military action.

Obama said the U.S. will use its “unique capabilities” to protect Libyan civilians and provide the right conditions necessary for military interventions by its European counterparts.

“We’re answering the calls of a threatened people and we’re acting in the interest of the United States and the world,” said Obama.

Obama stressed that no U.S. troops will be deployed in Libya.

“I’m also proud that we’re acting as part of a coalition,” he said.
