NY-Based Diplomat Says Shen Yun ‘a Great, Great, Great Show’
NEW YORK—Mr. Dharmaputra, a diplomat based in New York, said Shen Yun Performing Arts is good for people to see, because Chinese culture has much to teach, and it is important for the whole world to understand China.
Mr. Dharmaputra attended Shen Yun’s performance at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Sunday, Jan. 19. Afterward, he said: “Oh, this is a great, great, great show!”
“Really, it is beautiful,” Mr. Dharmaputra said.
The New York-based company revives 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. The traditional culture, which has long been rooted in the values of Buddhism, Daoism, and other disciplines, is believed to be imparted by divine beings. It was nearly wiped out by the communist regime in China, and to this day, Shen Yun cannot be seen in China, although it tours the world spreading the nation’s true values, explains the company website.
“It is just like living … the history,” Mr. Dharmaputra said. Story-based classical Chinese dance and ethnic folk dance bring the legends and history to life. Shen Yun’s unique digital projection screen also opens the stage to vast and intricately designed scenes from China’s history and the heavens.
Mr. Dharmaputra admired the colors and the costumes. Throughout China’s history, different dynasties brought with them different attire, and China’s 55 ethnic groups also expressed their unique characteristics in their dress. In the court of the Tang Dynasty, in particular, the garb was said to be modeled after that worn in the heavens.
Shen Yun’s website gives an example to illustrate the sometimes serious role clothing played in Chinese history: “Confucius praises Duke Huan of Qi. Seeing inner-strife threatening to tear the country apart, the Duke convinced other lords to fight against the barbarians instead of each other. He standardized clothing styles in his kingdom and extended the rules to nine other lords, thus uniting them.”
