NEW YORK—In light of the controversy around Anthony Weiner’s inappropriate tweets to women, the U.S. representative is facing calls to resign. The Epoch Times went to the streets and asked New Yorkers: “Should Rep. Weiner resign?”

I am sort of torn. I am leaning toward yes. It does not seem that he handles pressure well. If he came out at the start and said, “Yes, that was me,” I could respect him for that. But the lie was so idiotic. He made it so big. He is not a strategic thinker.

I am torn, but I would not vote for him. If he hadn’t lied and it was just the tweets, that is between him and his wife. But the fact that he lies … And [it was] such a ridiculous lie, a schoolboy lie—it was childish.

My honest opinion: yes. I am not judging him on what he did. If it was private and did not affect the people he served, [it’s one thing]. But someone like him, or Clinton, or Schwarzenegger … Don’t do it where it can come out publicly. His wife should spit in his face and walk away and take everything he has. He should never be mayor.

No. Let the people decide. He does not have to resign. Something will come along next week. We were talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s illegitimate child last week. There is a long time between now and the elections.

Yes. It is a big public image issue. He made a mistake. Some people can come back, but I don’t think he can. He should just try to get through it, move on, and take it from there.

Yes. It seems that it is the proper thing to do. It is not necessarily about what he does in his private life. But as a representative, he should be someone people can look up to. Also, with the upcoming elections, it puts the Democrats in a really bad light, so it is better if he disassociates himself [from them].
