NEW YORK—Governor Andrew Cuomo activated the Emergency Operations Center on Wednesday evening to monitor the incoming winter storm that began hitting New York during the day.

“Winter weather has arrived for many parts of the state, so as a precaution we have opened the emergency operation center to coordinate response efforts using all state and local resources,” Gov. Cuomo said in a statement Wednesday.

The Governor advised against any non-essential travel during the storm as roads are expected to be icy and blizzard conditions could prevent safe travel.

In addition to the snow that fell during the day which did not accumulate, New York City is expected to see more rain than snow. The MTA has readied its deicer trains to keep the tracks running.

“This can be an especially challenging time of year to operate mass transit services but we are continually reviewing our plans, maintaining our equipment and assessing the forecast,” said MTA Chairman & CEO Joseph J. Lhota in a statement.

In anticipation of heavy rain, sandbags were placed around the World Trade Center site, which flooded during Hurricane Sandy.

Heavy Rain is expected Wednesday night before letting up on Thursday which gives way to a sunny Friday. Bad weather is expected back in the area on Saturday with a snowy rainy mix.
