NEW YORK—Mayor Bloomberg has asked City Council to amend the Mayoral term limit. “I don’t want to walk away from a city I feel I can help lead through these tough times” said Bloomberg on his website.

The amendment put forth by Bloomberg will enable the mayor of New York City to be re-elected as many times as the voters see fit. The voting public, however, are not allowed to vote on the bill to amend term limits. It is the City Council that will decide, many of who are also at the end of their terms.

“And so to put it in very practical terms: handling this financial crisis while strengthening essential services - such as education and public safety - is a challenge I want to take on for the people of New York,” said Bloomberg in a recent press release.

This amendment proposes to lengthen the existing term limit of two terms of four years to three for the mayor, city council and other elected officials.
