New Marvel Comic Reveals That Captain America Was a Double-Agent All Along

In the newest installment of the Captain America comic book, the Marvel superhero is revealed to be a double-agent for Hydra, an international terrorist organization affiliated with the Nazis.

Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort told Time that the plan to make Captain America a villain was in the works by 2014, and was intended to reflect trends in contemporary politics.

“There should be a feeling of horror or unsettledness at the idea that somebody like this can secretly be part of this organization,” he said. “There are perfectly normal people in the world who you would interact with on a professional level or personal level, and they seem like the salt of the earth but then it turns out they have some horrible secret—whether it’s that they don’t like a certain group of people or have bodies buried in their basement.”

Brevoort said that this isn’t a joke and that the comic will explore the consequences of the revelation in the months to come.

“Captain America: Steve Rogers #1” is in stores now.
