Nevada’s unemployment figures were the basis for statements by conservative senatorial candidate Sharron Angle. In her latest campaign ad, Angle drew attention to the increase in unemployment during Harry Reid’s years as senator.

The video said that the unemployment rate in Nevada was only 4.4 percent when Democrat Reid became majority leader and now that rate has gone up to 14 percent, topping Michigan, making Nevada the state with the highest unemployment rate in the United States.

On the talk show “Face to Face” with Jon Ralston, Angle said that her solution to the unemployment problem is to cut unemployment benefits.

“The truth about it is that they keep extending these unemployment benefits to the point where people are afraid to go out and get a job because the job doesn’t pay as much as the unemployment benefit does,” she said. “What we need to do is make that unemployment benefit go down, not just completely remove the safety net from them while they go out and look for a job.”

As a Democrat, Angle’s opponent regards the matter differently. “We have a fundamental obligation to stand with these families so that they can make ends meet and help our economy recover,” said Reid on his official website. “For those who question whether this is an emergency situation, they should talk to the Nevadans who I hear from every day who rely on this assistance to put food on the table and pay the bills while they look for work.”

Angle had previously raised $2.29 million dollars in 42 days. Amanda Kornegay, finance director for Angle, stated that she had “never seen this type of momentum for a candidate in such a short period of time.”

Reid has President Barack Obama’s support. The president and Reid have stated that they would cooperate to help jump start Nevada’s economy again.

“I’m not going to be satisfied, and Harry Reid’s not going to be satisfied until everyone who wants a job in Nevada has a job,” Obama said in a speech in Las Vegas. “We want Nevada to be on the move. We want the Las Vegas dream to be a reality. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Reid also released ads to refute Angle’s ideas about Social Security and Medicare. The four-term senator does not agree with Angle.

According to a July 13 poll by the Rasmussen Reports, Angle and Reid are about tied in the opinions of likely voters.
