For decades space has been an open frontier for humankind to explore, but we don’t often hear about those astronauts who’ve had a very close call with tragedy.

This video highlights 10 space missions in which astronauts have had near-death experiences.

Disastrous events that astronauts are lucky to have survived include times when spacecraft have started to spin uncontrollably, caught alight, or have been struck by lightning—twice.

A recent space-related accident happened in 2013 when an American astronaut found his helmet was filling up with liquid. It was a very close call for Luca Parmitano, who eventually found out that the leak came from inside his spacesuit.
