MP Lise St-Denis announced that she is leaving the New Democratic Party to join the Liberals on Tuesday.
“Since my arrival in the House of Commons, I have carefully listened to the speeches made by Liberals MPs. I recognize today not only the collective value of their work but more so their sense of duty and commitment,” St-Denis told reporters in Ottawa.
St-Denis said that since achieving official opposition status, the NDP has adopted positions she cannot support, such as on public-private partnerships, Libya, and the Senate.
The NDP says if St-Denis wants to switch, she should resign her seat and run in a by-election instead of simply crossing the floor to join the Liberals.
