NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Ondee Jason is a manager at Vanderbilt University, and also a singer/songwriter. She and Whitman Jason, a sales director of operations, “play a little at hotels around town,” she said. After seeing and hearing Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center on Feb. 25, she said, “It’s engaging and very epic, and the music is fabulous.”
Mrs. Jason said one of the reasons she found the music so good was that “it’s very dynamic, and it echoes what’s going on.” New York-based Shen Yun has a unique orchestra with Western classical and traditional Chinese instruments. It also has solo vocalists who sing in bel canto style.
Mr. Jason, who plays guitar, said: “The two soloists were very engaging and strong and very … powerful.” By intermission, they had heard soprano Pi-ju Huang sing “The Truth has Been Clearly Told for a While,” and tenor Huan Xing sing “Break Open the Gates of Delusion.”
Mrs. Jason made it clear that it was not only the music that excited her. She said, “I love the dance and the costumes, the pageantry is beautiful.”
She also enjoyed the costumes and scenery. “It’s been very visual and I love the colors,” she said.
Mr. Jason said the interactive, animated projected backdrop was “very creative.” Mrs. Jason gasped and said, “Oh yes!’
She said, “You get excited every time they jump off the stage. It’s awesome!”
