Mystery Creature Has the Internet Baffled: Is It a Cat or a Dog

August 17, 2019 Updated: August 22, 2019

The mysteries of nature continue to provoke awe and wonder in scientists, but they also create a lot of confusion on the internet. Whether it’s a crow that looks like a gorilla or a dog and baby having a howling argument, even the animals who are closest to us can still surprise us with their behavior… and in a very special case from Quebec in Canada, their appearance.

It got a little crazy on the web for the last two days!C'est la folie depuis 2 jours sur le WEB!!

It all started when a Twitter user named n2o posted a bedeviling photo of a very furry creature. The animal was definitely unforgettable. Lots of crazy gray and white fur, long whiskers, piercing amber-colored eyes, and a big ears. What on earth was this amazing animal?

Thousands of people read and shared the post and launched an intense debate about what exactly this was. Some thought it was a very furry breed of small dog, such as a terrier or Lhasa Apso. Others argued that it looked liked one of the long-haired breeds of cats, such as a Persian or Norwegian Forest Cat.

Back and forth the arguments went till finally, the creature’s name was revealed: Atchoum. It turned out that this special pet had his own website, which acknowledged the confusion that his unique appearance can cause.

“I’m hairy, not scary,” he “wrote” on his website. “Some people say my wild furs and intense amber eyes make me look like a dog, an owl, a mad scientist, a Gremlin, Lorax or the Grinch but I’m happy to be me.”

As one after another news outlet reported on Atchoum, the truth was finally revealed. He is in fact a feline, but one with a special condition called “hypertrichosis” (from the Greek, “overly hairy”) sometimes called werewolf syndrome. But no, Atchoum isn’t a werewolf; however, much some of his pictures make him look like one. He’s a Persian cat whose name is French for that of Sneezy, one of the seven dwarfs. As his human told Catster: “I chose the name because when you sneeze hard it messes up hair, like Atchoum’s.”

It just so happens that Atchoum’s rescue mom, whose name is Nathalie Côté, is a professional pet groomer, which means he gets the best care a cat (or a dog) could ever wish for. She told Catster, “I’m cleaning and grooming his eyes and nose two times a day, and I brush him twice a week.”

Atchoum regularly gets drawn and painted by local artists, and he’s even inspired a unique fashion line of ties and bowties made for dogs and cats by the company Catso. This celebrity of the Canadian cat world has won the hearts of many internet viewers with his distinctive appearance, which can even be owl-like at times.

Atchoum’s social media presence has become so popular across multiple platforms that he even made an appearance in a children’s book alongside fellow Canadian celebrity cat Oreo, a fluffy black-and-white cat who hails from Saint-Zotique in Quebec and is also known for his profuse fluffy hair and distinguished fashion style.

The two cats appear in Atchoum & Oreo: First Day of School, where they confront the important issues of bullying. Oreo’s human, Linda Modugno, happens to be an illustrator, so she and Nathalie Côté were able to collaborate to make this book extra special.

Although everyone now knows that Atchoum is, in fact, a cat, there are still folks out there who just can’t get over this one-of-a-kind feline. That’s alright with Atchoum. “Life is good,” the big kitty “writes” on his website. “I feel good and I believe we need to enjoy every day.”

Here’s a new designer from Quebec who creates fashion accessories and others for both dogs and cats. Thank you @…
