The wildfire near Mount Charleston and the Spring Mountains in Nevada has expanded to between 6,000 and 8,000 acres, officials said.
The Bureau of Land Management told KTNV-TV that there is zero containment for the fire, which has triggered the evacuation of more than 520 people from their homes.
On Thursday, the fire was reportedly only 2,000 acres before it crossed Kyle Canyon near Mount Charleston.
Firefighters are having a difficult time battling the blaze due to the steep terrain. Officials have deployed a large tanker to spray orange-colored fire retardant.
“When you have a fire like this, you bring in resources from everywhere,” Suzanne Shelp, a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman, told the Las Vegas Sun.
The hot and dry weather conditions also has made it hard for firefighters to contain the fire.
State Routes 156 and 157 have been shut down at the turnoff at U.S. Highway 95, reported KTNV.
At least 120 fire crew members, including a Hotshot crew, were sent to deal with the fire, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
No injuries were reported, while no structures were burned.
