Mother Arrested After 3-Year-Old Daughter Found Dead in Southern California Home
The mother of a 3-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of murder after the girl was found dead inside her Southern California home, police said. KTLA reported that 30-year-old Susan Rank was taken into custody less than a day after her daughter was discovered dead.
Officials were called to a sober living facility called Set Free Fellowship, and they found that the child—named Zayla— died before they arrived, according to ABC7.
Family members said that Rank is mentally ill and was born with a brain tumor. “When a 3 year-old becomes collateral damage of somebody else’s mental illness, we as a society have to say what is broken in this system?” aunt Tracylyn Sharrit told ABC7. “Zayla couldn’t protect herself. Susan couldn’t protect her either. She was mentally gone.”
KTLA, citing a family member, reported that Rank “snapped” and killed her girl. Her aunt said that there was never a history of violence against the 3-year-old.
