McALLEN, Texas—The arts are a gateway to the spirit. On the evening of Sept. 21, mother and daughter Ella Ramirez and Odalys Curiel were taken on a spiritual journey by Shen Yun Performing Arts.
New York-based Shen Yun has been touring the world to revive the spiritual and traditional values of China’s 5,000-year-old culture since 2006.

“It was a wonderful experience and I definitely left feeling more spiritual, seeing life in a different perspective. It was a beautiful performance.” daughter Curiel said.

“I think this should be implemented more in nowaday’s society. We tend to separate ourselves from that spiritual aspect of life, and it’s very necessary,” she continued.

Shen Yun has been showcasing divinely inspired stories for their audiences in their all-new productions every year, reminding people of humanity’s connection to the divine.

“It was really great to come here tonight and get that back after everyday errands and stuff. But overall, I thought it was a really great eye-opening performance, very spiritual. And I loved it,” Curiel said.

As someone who had studied dance before, Curiel appreciated the dancers’ dedication. “You could tell they’re very dedicated, very hardworking individuals. And I am just proud to be able to say that I used to be a dancer.”

Curiel also translated some of her mother’s thoughts after seeing Shen Yun’s performance.

“She thought it was a very graceful performance, very emotional. She was very impressed,” Curiel said, “She loved being able to learn more about the Chinese culture. That’s what she was able to take from the show.”

Also in the audience was Tom Hicks, a pastor, and his wife Dominic Hicks.

“I like it because of the anti-atheism, anti-revolution point of view, and I enjoy the culture,” Mr. Hicks said.

His wife commented on how Shen Yun cannot be seen in China today. “I find really interesting what I’ve seen here, and I am very impacted by the fact that you cannot have this show in China.”
She added that the show had made her so excited that she won’t be able to sleep.
