“Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” was a television show that children across the country loved. It aired from 1968 to 2001 and taught many generations of children lessons about life and kindness.
Fred Rogers, known mostly as Mr. Rogers, was a role model to many of his viewers and continued to be so even after his death in 2003. He will now be immortalized on the silver screen in the film “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” which is set to release this fall and stars Tom Hanks.
Fred McFeely Rogers was born March 20, 1928, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He decided to go into television when he first encountered one in 1951 because he realized there must be a better way to use this fabulous instrument to nurture those who watch and listen.
He first worked on the television show “The Children’s Corner,” where he helped develop puppets, characters, and music for the broadcast but realized he could still do so much more.
When he met Margaret McFarland, a child psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh, the idea of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” began to form. Once the show aired, Fred Rogers consulted with McFarland for almost every script and song broadcast over the show’s 30-year run so that each episode would speak to a child’s heart.

Now that many of those children touched by “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” have grown up, they want to spread his positivity to the new generation and pay tribute to the man who had such a great impact on their lives. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” was made to do just that as well as help those who may have forgotten just how far a little kindness can go.
“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” was named so for the song Mr. Rogers sang at the beginning of every episode. The words “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor. Won’t you be mine?” set the tone for each show and lifted many children’s spirits in a way they haven’t forgotten.

The film is loosely based on an article written by journalist Tom Junod in 1998. It follows the jaded magazine writer as he interviews and profiles Fred Rogers for his article, forms a friendship with the older man, and learns the power of empathy, kindness, and decency from television’s kindest neighbor.
The directors, actors, and everyone else who worked on “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” strove to recreate the feel and look of the long-running children’s show in the best way possible. It was filmed in the same studio “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” was filmed, and items were borrowed from Fred Rogers’s own wardrobe to create a look of authenticity.
